Antique Austrian 800 Silver & Enamel Double Headed Eagle Couronne de Fer Medal

Antique Austrian 800 Silver & Enamel Double Headed Eagle "Couronne de Fer" Medal. This stunning pocket watch fob was made around the early 1900s in Austria.

It features the original main piece of a rare medal, the "Ordre Imperial de la Couronne de Fer / Kaiserlicher Orden der Eisernen Krone", a masterfully crafted gilt silver Habsburg Double Eagle (emblem of the family that reigned over the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian empire) with colorful enamel. The medal was made earlier than the rest of the fob, probably around the early 1800s (the medal was first commissioned by Napoleon I in 1816 and last issued in 1918) and later repurposed as a watch fob by someone being nostalgic about the last Habsburg empire that had ended with WWI. This specific version of the medal carries oak leaves which was awarded for bravery in combat. The medal is attached to a piece of black fabric (further supporting the assumption that someone was "mourning" for the empire) with an 800 silver chain and lobster clasp. Overall very good antique condition with minor loss to the enamel. This rare and unusual piece measures 7 long and weighs. The lobster clasp carries Austrian hallmarks identifying the piece as made from 800 silver in the city of Vienna after 1921. The pendant was tested for silver but doesn't carry any hallmarks, which is not unusual for pieces of the early 19th Century. A very rare one-of-a-kind piece!
